The 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500 takes place at legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 27. Despite starting in the back row, Alexander Rossi is the favorite (+800) to win the Indy 500 for the second time in three years.
Drivers are still getting familiar with the new aerodynamic package which has a design that makes it harder to control the car at high speeds and could limit the passing opportunities at this year’s race. Rossi has finished first and seventh in the Indy 500 the past two seasons and sits second overall in the IndyCar standings.
Helio Castroneves, who will start in the third row, sits at +1000 to win. If Castroneves accomplishes the feat, he will become just the fourth driver in history – and the first since 1991 – to win The Greatest Spectacle in Racing four times.
Castroneves has finished in the top 10 at the Indy 500 in 14 of his 17 times in the race. Last year he finished second despite starting 19th, proving that he is always ready to contend for one more win, regardless of where he starts.
Chevy is perhaps the team best positioned to have one of its drivers win the race as nine of the top 11 racers to qualify drive Chevys. Chevy has typically been better in shorter races, winning only two 500s since 2012, however leading up to this race Chevrolet seems to be catching Honda in many aspects so this could be the year they Chevys prove they can win.
